About Porto da Cruz

The village of Porto da Cruz is located on the northern coast of Madeira Island, between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches of Porto da Cruz are especially suitable for beginner surfers as they are the only ones with volcanic black sand with surfable waves. Porto da Cruz still preserves its traditions, with a relaxed lifestyle and a very hospitable local culture. In the area, there are several restaurants where you can taste the regional gastronomy, such as fresh fish, seafood and other traditional Madeiran dishes, as well as wines and spirits. The village does not have a very busy nightlife like other surfing destinations in Portugal, however if you are looking for a closer contact with nature and a relaxed lifestyle then this is your place to go.

Surf Reminder

Surfing in Madeira can be thrilling, but it’s important to recognize that the waves here can be powerful, and some days might feel too intense for certain skill levels. There might be days where the conditions will not be ideal for surfing, but don’t worry, we’ll make the most of it. We’ll explore the island’s other amazing offerings, from hiking along stunning cliffs to discovering hidden gems in the local culture. We’ll ensure you still have a memorable and rewarding experience, even if the waves are a bit too big to ride on some days.

About Pico do Arieiro

One of the highlights of Madeira Surf Travel Camp next to surfing is to visit Pico do Arieiro at the sunrise. Pico do Arieiro is one of Madeira’s highest peaks, standing at 1,818 meters (5,965 feet) above sea level. It offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island’s rugged landscape. The mountain is popular among hikers, especially for the trail that connects it to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on Madeira. Even if you’re not hiking, you can drive up to the summit for stunning views and a unique experience. Be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions while visiting this magnificent spot.

If our guests are keen to plan it for a day off surfing we can also organise a 8 km (4-5h) hike from Pico de Areiro to Pico do Ruivo The "Stairway to Heaven" a well-known for its dramatic views and challenging terrain, including steep staircases carved into the volcanic rock.
