Why Surfing Makes Women Happy: 7 Reasons to Fall in Love with the Ocean

Have you ever wondered why surfers seem so happy?

Maybe it’s the excitement of catching your first wave. Maybe it’s the feeling of warm water on your skin, the sound of the ocean, or the moment you realize you’re capable of something you never imagined doing. Or maybe it’s something deeper.

Why do so many women describe surfing as one of the most rewarding experiences of their lives?

Surfing brings together movement, nature, challenge, freedom, and human connection in a way that few other activities can. For many women, it becomes much more than a sport. It becomes a source of confidence, joy, friendship, and personal growth.

At Girl on the Wave, we’ve been organizing surf retreats since 2018, bringing women together in beautiful destinations such as Portugal, Costa Rica, and Morocco. Over the years, we’ve witnessed countless first waves, personal breakthroughs, new friendships, and unforgettable moments in the ocean.
So why does surfing make so many women happy?

Here are seven reasons why falling in love with surfing might be one of the best things you ever do.

1. Surfing Helps You Live in the Present Moment

Modern life is full of distractions. Work deadlines, messages, social media, responsibilities, and endless to-do lists can make it difficult to switch off. But when you’re surfing, your attention naturally shifts. You need to observe the waves, feel the movement of the water, control your balance, and respond to what’s happening around you. There isn’t much room to think about yesterday’s problems or tomorrow’s meetings. You’re simply there. In the ocean. In the moment. This is one of the reasons surfing can feel so refreshing mentally.

The focused attention required by surfing shares some characteristics with mindfulness practices, although surfing isn’t a substitute for mental health treatment. For many women, spending time in the ocean creates a welcome break from everyday mental noise. And sometimes, that break is exactly what we need.

2. Surfing Builds Confidence in Unexpected Ways

Think about the first time you tried something that genuinely challenged you. Perhaps you felt nervous, uncertain, or convinced you wouldn’t succeed. Now imagine standing on a surfboard for the first time. The wave starts moving beneath you. You push yourself up. For a brief moment, you’re standing. And suddenly, something changes. You realize you can do something that seemed impossible just a few minutes earlier.

Surfing offers these small moments of achievement again and again. Learning to paddle, understanding how waves work, catching your first green wave, or improving your turns can all become meaningful personal milestones. The confidence developed through learning a new skill can influence how we approach challenges outside the ocean, too. Not because surfing magically changes your life, but because it gives you tangible experiences of learning, persistence, and progress. At Girl on the Wave, we see this particularly often among women who arrive convinced they’re too old, too inexperienced, or not athletic enough to learn. And then they catch their first wave.

3. Being in the Ocean Can Support Mental Wellbeing

There’s something special about spending time near water. Research into blue spaces — environments such as oceans, lakes, and rivers — suggests that access to these places can be associated with positive mental wellbeing.Surfing adds physical activity, concentration, and social interaction to that experience. Physical exercise is widely recognized as beneficial for mental health, while spending time outdoors may also support relaxation and mood. Of course, surfing isn’t a cure for stress, anxiety, or depression. But it can become a positive part of a balanced lifestyle. The combination of fresh air, movement, ocean sounds, and focused attention may help some people feel calmer, more energized, and more connected to their surroundings. And unlike many conventional workouts, surfing often feels less like exercise and more like an adventure. You’re not counting repetitions. You’re looking for the next wave.

4. Surfing Creates a Different Relationship With Your Body

For many women, physical activity has traditionally been connected to appearance, weight, or achieving a particular body shape. Surfing offers another perspective. In the ocean, what matters is what your body can do. Can you paddle a little farther? Can you improve your balance? Can you stand up more smoothly? Can you understand the timing of a wave? Progress becomes connected to strength, coordination, confidence, and skill rather than appearance.

You begin appreciating your body for its abilities. Surfing also challenges the idea that you need to look a certain way to participate in a sport. Women of different ages, body types, and fitness levels can enjoy surfing, provided the conditions and instruction are appropriate. You don’t need to look like a professional surfer. You just need curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn. And sometimes, that’s where a healthier relationship with your body begins.

5. Surfing Connects Women Through Shared Experiences

One of the most beautiful things about surfing is the community it creates. You might arrive at a surf retreat alone, knowing absolutely nobody. But after a few days of sharing waves, celebrating small victories, laughing about wipeouts, and enjoying meals together, something begins to happen. Strangers become friends.

The ocean gives people a shared experience that doesn’t depend on their professions, backgrounds, or nationalities. In the water, everyone is learning something. Everyone has moments of frustration. Everyone celebrates when somebody catches a beautiful wave. This creates opportunities for genuine connection. At Girl on the Wave, our international surf retreats bring together women who might never otherwise have met. Some arrive with friends, while others travel solo. Many leave with new friendships and plans to meet again somewhere else in the world.

Our women’s surf retreats in Costa Rica are designed around this combination of surfing, shared experiences, and supportive community.

Because sometimes the people you meet become just as important as the waves you catch.

6. Surfing Teaches You to Accept What You Cannot Control

The ocean doesn’t follow your schedule. Some days the waves are perfect. Other days they’re too big, too small, too messy, or simply different from what you expected. You can’t control the wind. You can’t command a wave to break exactly where you want it. And you certainly can’t guarantee that every attempt will be successful. Surfing teaches you to observe, adapt, and respond.

Sometimes you catch an amazing wave. Sometimes you fall. Sometimes you spend more time paddling than actually surfing. And that’s part of the experience. Learning to surf involves patience, humility, persistence, and the ability to laugh at yourself. It also teaches you that progress isn’t always linear. One day you feel unstoppable. The next day you’re struggling with something you thought you’d already mastered. But you keep learning.

For many women, this becomes one of the most meaningful lessons surfing offers: you don’t have to control everything to enjoy the experience. You can learn to work with what’s happening instead.

7. Surfing Brings Adventure Back Into Everyday Life

When was the last time you did something completely new? Something that made you feel excited, slightly nervous, and genuinely curious? As adults, our routines can become predictable. We work, organize, plan, and repeat. Surfing introduces an element of adventure.

Every session is different. Every wave is unique. Every day brings a new opportunity to learn. You might discover a beautiful beach, experience an incredible sunrise, or find yourself laughing with people you met only a few days earlier. Surfing can also inspire travel.

From the Atlantic coast of Portugal to the warm Pacific waters of Costa Rica and the surf towns of Morocco, the search for waves can introduce you to extraordinary places. At Girl on the Wave, we believe surf travel should be about more than improving your technique. It should also be about discovering new destinations, experiencing different cultures, and making memories that stay with you long after your holiday ends.

That’s why our retreats combine surfing with yoga, local experiences, and time to explore.

Do You Need to Be Fit or Athletic to Start Surfing?

One of the most common misconceptions about surfing is that you need to be extremely fit before you begin. While surfing requires physical effort, you don’t need to be a professional athlete to take your first lesson. A good beginner program starts with the fundamentals. You’ll learn about ocean safety, surfboard positioning, paddling, catching waves, and standing up. Your instructor should choose conditions appropriate for your ability and help you develop confidence gradually.

Basic swimming ability and comfort in the water are important, and it’s always worth discussing any physical limitations with your surf school before booking. You can also prepare by improving general fitness, mobility, and swimming confidence. Most importantly, remember that everybody learns at a different pace. There’s no universal timeline for catching your first wave.

Is Surfing Good for Women Over 30, 40, or 50?

Absolutely. There’s no age at which you suddenly become too old to enjoy learning something new. Women begin surfing at many different stages of life. Some discover it in their twenties. Others take their first lesson in their forties or fifties. The right coaching, suitable conditions, realistic expectations, and appropriate physical preparation are far more important than age alone. In fact, starting something new later in life can be especially rewarding.

It creates opportunities to challenge assumptions, develop new skills, and rediscover the excitement of being a beginner. You don’t have to compete with anyone. Your surfing journey belongs to you.

Why Women’s Surf Retreats Can Be a Great Place to Start

Learning to surf can feel intimidating, especially if you’ve never spent much time in the ocean. Joining a supportive women’s surf retreat can make the experience more approachable. Instead of organizing lessons, accommodation, transportation, and activities separately, you can join a structured program.
You’ll also meet other women who share your interest in surfing and adventure.

A well-organized retreat can provide:

  • Professional surf coaching adapted to your level

  • A supportive environment for learning

  • Opportunities to practice and improve

  • Video feedback to better understand your technique

  • Yoga and recovery sessions

  • A welcoming community of like-minded travelers

At Girl on the Wave, our retreats are designed to combine professional coaching with the relaxed atmosphere of a surf holiday. Whether you’re a complete beginner or already catching waves, we want you to feel supported throughout your experience.
